THE NEXT CHAPTER

Suited and tailored to lead, they are dark-skinned, they are head-covered, they are striding, they are swaying, they are spitting bars, running laps, making covers, shooting hoops, setting trends, writing scripts and are here to stay, no longer at the back. It doesn’t matter what state the world is in, these young creatives are determined to make their mark, with a plea that nothing should come in between you and your success – especially as children of immigrants.

CULTURE

SISTERHOOD

Our hood isn’t your hood that you claim to be sisterhood. Our hood is toxic, Our hood is ignored, Our hood is only attended to, to strip the only colours That are the garments of colour that awaken our soul. “Free the nipple, free your mind, a woman’s choice is her choice” But only when we say it is. So when we create our own space, When we call out what’s white and not quite come for us. Equality.

SKIN

They had me scrubbing a little harder on my face to abolish the pigmentation,

They had me looking a little longer at the lightening products on the shop shelves, They had me waking up a little earlier to straighten the culture straight out of my hair.Glowing up they’d say, Don’t stay out in the sun, You’ll get too dark.’ And so I stay out in the sun,

Till my diamonds form on my face,

Till my complexion glistens gold,

Till my skin bakes my ancestors back to life to have their stories retold.

#BlackBoyJoy: BLACK MEN ARE TIRED AND BLACK BOYS NEED TO BE INSPIRED

Gangsters, thugs or victims of police brutality; Black men are tired and Black boys need to be inspired. In an effort to take back their narrative and break away from the constant rhetoric that portrays young Black men as aggressive, unprogressive and only ever victimized by authority figures in the news; #BlackBoyJoy created waves across social media.

MY FINGERS TRACE THROUGH HERITAGE

For Black women the ‘choice’ to wear their hair in its natural form is not always so simple. There are a number of factors we are faced with daily and as a result, subconsciously that ‘choice’ can get distorted or even taken away. Both western society and the Black community play a part in limiting Black women. For many, there are years before they go natural where they just don’t consider it an option, which is often deeper than assumed.

BLISS OF DIVERSITY

In this issue of Al-Naeem, in an ode to Enninful’s work, Editor-in-Chief Asma Elmi proves how the impact of a mainstream campaign embodying representation has had on her and the upcoming models featured in the shoot. Upon asking her what motivated the vision for a ‘bliss of diversity’, Elmi commented on her view of the industry as it stands.
